Vincent Robert "Bob" Arnold (11/7/1921-7/10/2012) was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Harlan Julius and Lena Mae Arnold. Bob spent most of his life in Austin, Texas where he graduated from Austin High School and attended the University of Texas.
A World War 2 veteran, Bob volunteered for the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet in Jan. 1942 and served his country until his return to Austin to attend UT where he met his future wife Frances Merle Edwards across the bridge table. Bob and Frances spent the balance of their lives avid card players, with bridge the game of choice.
An active member of Austin's business, social, and cultural community, Bob owned and operated Big Bear Food Stores, served as president of Westwood Country Club, served as Commodore at Austin Aqua Festival, and was an active supporter of Austin's many cultural events and activities. Bob and Frances were longtime members of Highland Park Baptist Church.
Bob was predeceased by a daughter, Suzanne Frances Arnold and his wife of 64 years, Frances Merle Arnold. His three surviving children are Robert Scott and wife, Margaret Ann Arnold, Carolyn Dianne and husband, Richard H. Shafer, and Marilyn Jeanne and husband Roy Glenn Burton. Survivors include his 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren along with one sister, Jeanne Thompson.
Bob Arnold left his mark on Austin, Texas and will be dearly missed. Just ask any Austin old-timer whether they remember Bob Arnold or Big Bear Food Stores and you will likely get a fond smile and a story about Bob Arnold or shopping at Big Bear. We celebrate his life and the difference he made in the lives of so many.
