Tanae was born January 14, 1996 and from the day I laid eyes on her, I knew she was going to be a handful. At two weeks old, she was the first of eight to open her eyes and the one of eight to capture my heart.

Tanae was very easy to train. Her high-level of intelligence ranged from learning to verbally respond to my commands and included her learning the property line of our home without any visual markers as not to go into the neighbor's yard.

She was a typical puppy often talking back after being chastised and yes, chewing on things. I remember the day she chewed up one of her brother Antoine's games, he tried to discipline her only to have Tanae slowly turn her head away as if to say "Toine please, you get fussed at by mama just like I do, get out of my face."

With each passing moment of every day, month or year she and I became closer and closer. Tanae became a part of me that only my heart can describe. She was my companion, my smile my best friend, my protector. About four years ago, Tanae began to "cling" to me. She wouldn't leave my side for any reason. I would ask her "Why are you clinging to me like this?" Shortly thereafter, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was always there with those big, beautiful eyes comforting me all the way.

Over the past several months, Tanae's health began to deteriorate. She could no longer hear, she was slowly losing her sight, and her legs were weakening - limiting her ability to walk. On December 19, 2011, after multiple seizures, I looked at her face and her eyes sadly spoke to me saying "Mama, I can't go any farther" so I had to let her go. It's been said you will know when it's time to let go, and that is so true, but I never anticipated how hard it would be to do so.

Tanae, I was lucky to have been there the day you were born – and I would like to thank you for the 16 years of comfort, protection, laughter and unconditional love you have brought to my life. You will be missed more than you will ever know.
